– Shirley Caesar Goes Viral With #UNameItChallenge

shirley-caesarFirst lady of Gospel Shirley Caesar is trending on social media. Caesar’s performance of one of her classic songs, “Hold My Mule,” was remixed into a Thanksgiving meme for Instagram’s U Name It challenge. The song went viral and Ceasar has reacted to it while speaking with ABC 11.

“It’s so exciting.” Caesar said. The meme asks Caesar what she is cooking for Thanksgiving. The meme then cuts to Caesar’s edited performance where she sings, “Beans, Greens, Potatoes, Tomatoes … you name it!”

Caesar’s cameo in the Instagram video is from her original gospel performance of her song “Hold My Mule,” which tells a story about a farmer so excited about his blessings that he can’t contain his excitement, so he asks for someone to hold the animal. The performance was shot eight years ago at her church — Mt. Calvary Word of Faith in Raleigh.

As the meme was going viral, Rapper Snoop Dogg jumped on the train as well making a full Thanksgiving rap song with the Shirley Ceasar sample, over a DJ Battlecat beat while Shirley Caesar sings about her now-famous “beans, greens, tomatoes, potatoes… You name it!”

Chris Brown was one of the first to mow a video and upload on Instagram. The challenge went viral after he posted.

While Caesar is grateful that the video went viral, calling it a blessing, she is however not in agreement with all the twerking it has generated on social media.

“There’s those where they have women showing their rumps, their butts, I think they call it twerking. I want them to know that I see it as a sign of disrespect because I’m a pastor, I’m a gospel singer, and I love the Lord,” she said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I’m shocked they would do that.”
