The Bible Society has aided the conversion of a young Congolese from a witchcraft gang to a follower of Jesus Christ.

Emmanuel who lives in Congo Brazzaville began his journey into the witchcraft gang when his mother who had AIDS, became really sick. Thus, he was sent to an orphanage at age nine.

It was at the orphanage that he got lured into witchcraft. Emmanuel told Christian Today that at his initiation, he was made to hold a venomous snake and chant strange prayers while the other member made cuts on his arms in order to make him stronger.

Once the initiation was over, he learnt to pickpocket, steal from street stalls, and drink. Emmanuel also become very violent as “he’d beat up anyone if they had a disagreement.”

His story changed when he encountered Bible Society’s Good Samaritan programme, where young people are taught with Biblical parables and interactive workshops.

The Good Samaritan showed me how to live differently. Now my life is very different.

“I went to a pastor and talked to him about the things I had been doing,” Emmanuel said “I started praying and reading my Bible. I want to tell young people like me to avoid bad things and to accept Jesus Christ. I have done bad things. I have stolen from people and hurt people. But now I respect people because of Jesus.”

Emmanuel is completely transformed now. He now mentors other children at the orphanage, helps out with chores at the orphanage, teaches football, and is studying hard to be an accountant.

He is also seeking for the salvation of the other members of the witchcraft gang as he has been praying for them.
