– Pope Francis Arrives Egypt
Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis has landed in Cairo on a visit overshadowed by a series of recent attacks against Christians in the Arab world’s most populous country.
Amid high security, the 80-year-old pontiff will meet with Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, the Imam of the government-run Al-Azhar mosque and an Islamic philosophy professor, before meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Pope Tawadros II, the head of Egypt’s Coptic Church.
The Pope is visiting with aims of promoting reconciliation with the Muslim world on issues concerning the backdrop of recent jihadist attacks on the Middle East’s biggest Christian community.
The 80-year-old who is the 266th and current Pope of the Roman Catholic Church is due in Cairo around 1400 (1200 GMT) and his expected to meet with the grand imam of the Al-Azhar mosque over recent improvement in relations between Catholicism and the Sunni branch of Islam.
