12 worshippers are feared dead as gunmen launches early morning attack during a Sunday service in a church in Anambra, Channels TV News reports.

During the early hours of Sunday gunmen stormed St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ugwu Oye in Ozubulu, Anambra state and killing up to 12 members in what was described as a “shooting spree”

According to information gathered, the gunmen were hunting for another member of the community who came home from abroad. He was traced to his house but were told he had gone to church. On getting to the church, he had left and out of anger, probably, they rained bullets on worshipers in the church.

Following the event, about 12 persons have been reported killed and many wounded. The governor of the state, Willie  Obiano condemned the attack and promised to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.

He described the act as “sacrilegious” saying it was a spill off, from a feud between two members of the community who lives outside the community. He said it should not have involved the death of “very innocent” people and the church.

the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Garba Umar, told Channels Television that “information further revealed that this is not unconnected to a kind of a ‘gang war’ between indigenes of the state – the children of the same village – who are engaged in a warfare outside Nigeria, precisely in South Africa”.

Following the killing, President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his grief and also describing the incident as “an appalling crime against humanity and unspeakable sacrilege.”

In a message passed by the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, the president said “there was no justification whatsoever to target Church worshipers and kill them in cold blood.” He said this kind of atrocity “plumbs the depth of depravity and extreme cruelty of the kind that words cannot adequately express.”

The incident which happened in the early hours of Sunday during Mass made the president to reassure all Nigerians of his administration’s firm and uncompromising commitment to protect their lives and property at all times.

According to the president here is no religion that does not lay constant emphasis on the sanctity of life, and that “all Nigerians must rise up and speak with one voice against these remorseless evil men.”

The Police have apprehended some suspects allegedly involved in the killing.
