DAILY BREAD: WHY JESUS PRAYED FOR PETER

When Jesus was about to be arrested, Peter was ready to lay down his life and he meant it. But Jesus said something that caught my attention to Peter.

Jesus said “Simon, Simon, indeed satan has asked for you that he may sift you like a wheat but I have prayed for you that your faith should not fail, and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” – Luke 22:31-32

“and when you have returned to Me” really caught my attention in Jesus’ statement. Wait, I will explain.

After Jesus got arrested, a once brave Simon Peter denied him 3 times. The bible did not specify his feelings at the time of the denial or after but it must have something to do with insecurity, worthlessness, lost hope that the master they believed in has been led forth to be crucified. Everything must have felt worthless.

If we are to try to imagine ourselves in Peter’s place, we might have done the same or even worse when life throws its full weight on us. These things questions the faith we belief and cause us to shake. Most times we drift away from God just like Peter, not because we want to, but because we have been consumed by the circumstance.

We all go through these times and like Jesus, we all need someone to uphold us in prayer. Jesus knew that Peter will stray away from him but He didn’t leave him with instructions of a list of dos and don’ts. He didn’t leave him with a stern warning to make sure he doesn’t stray away. He didn’t even place a watchdog over him so that they may intimate Him with Peter’s progress. Jesus left Peter with prayer and words of exaltation.

At times, all you can do for that rebellious Christian brother, sister, son or daughter, is to give them a word and your prayers. Jesus knew Peter will stray but He already fought for him in prayer, and even gave him a commission while he was yet unworthy. Jesus saw the good in Peter. How many times have we driven people far from God instead of bringing them closer because of our judgmental views, don’t you see it’s not working? It’s time to try prayer!
