David OyedepoChairman, Board of Regents, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, David Oyedepo, on Thursday, called on leaders in Nigeria to look inward for solutions facing the country rather relying on foreign interventions.

Oyedepo called on the Federal Government to rise up to the challenge, adding that resort to the use of external forces has not proffered lasting solutions to any nation facing similar problems Nigeria is battling.

The Chancellor, in his remarks on Thursday at the 9th convocation lecture ahead of the award of certificates and degrees, said, “We must rise and sit up to face and solve our challenges of insecurity using indigenous solutions.

“If the world around us is decaying, we can make the difference. The people creating problems for Nigeria have no feelings. If only we know what has happened to Iran, Nigeria will sit up to face its challenges without waiting for external assistance.

“Lives are being lost daily and the country is loosing more citizens fleeing from being attacked to neighbouring countries. We must engage indigenous solutions and stop talking about economic growth that cannot be measured by any indices,” he added.

Calling for total commitment on the part of all, the renowned clergy urged the university system to rise up to the challenge as an embodiment creative intellect by providing practical homegrown solutions to the many problems facing Nigeria and its citizens.

The guest lecturer, Professor Yemi Osibajo, in his presentation, lamented that it is laughable that Nigeria, as the largest education system in the sub-Sahara-Africa, can only admit only 20 per cent of its youths seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
