As we drove down from work one fine Sunday afternoon, my friend and I decided to grab something to eat and on the way, we were stopped by traffic lights. Suddenly, two little; well, not too little boys ran to the car and started cleaning all the windows (It was quite timely as there were light showers earlier in the day thereby causing the car to accumulate dust). When these kids were done, they peered expectantly into the car hoping to get a tip-off; of course, there was a bit of reluctance as to whether they should be tipped off or not considering the fact nobody really asked for their services, but when the traffic lights turned green and we started to move, you could see the disappointment written clearly on their faces and they began asking for as little as N10, N20 just to eat even if we didn’t feel like giving them anything. I brought out something a bit noteworthy and handed it over to them and you could see their faces light up with a beautiful smile. My friend even asked why I had to give them soo much but I just smiled and moved to another topic of discussion. this scene played in my head for a long time as I kept wondering what it could have meant.

 We are already in another Yuletide season and most times, this is the time when we put on our good selves by trying to be nice and this only applies during this season, but then , if only we do some of the things we do every Christmas every other day of our lives, then we can actually put genuine smiles on peoples’ faces all year round not only during specific seasons.

Imagine the natural smile that a crippled or lame, blind, sick person gives you when you show them some love; it might not mean anything to you but it sure means a whole lot to them, more like them experiencing heaven. Heaven in this context doesn’t necessarily mean the beautiful golden city far up in the clouds, it also means those little beautiful things we do for people that may seem inconsequential to us; a smile, a call, a tip-off, a visit, the list is endless; these little acts of love mean heaven to a whole lot of people out there but we just haven’t figured it out.

So, in this beautiful season of love, as much as we all know that we ought to be kind to one another, let our show of love and kindness exceed this season.

There’s a whole lot of love to be shared but there are few people to share it, so why don’t you make yourself available and put a smile on someone’s face and make them experience Heaven on Earth in their little capacity.
