Why President Buhari Did Not Address Lekki Massacre During His Speech

President Muhammadu Buhari has been accused of failing to speak out and condemn the October 20, 2020 Lekki Toll Gate incident in Lagos.

In the incident that has now been known as Lekki Massacre, It was reported that troops stormed the area and surrounded #EndSARS protesters, who were campaigning against police brutality, rudeness and mismanagement.

As a result, people were shot at, and men in army uniforms quickly removed the bodies of victims.

In his address to the nation a few days later, President Mohammed Buhari spoke of the protests, the economic implications, but he did not talk about the massacre of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.

In a statement to reporters, Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special assistant for media and publicity, said Buhari had given his reason for not discussing the Lekki Toll Gate incident.

He said he did not speak at the Lekki Toll Gate because he did not get all the facts he needed.

“The president, had said he would refrain from discussing the Lekki Toll Gate incident until all the facts are established. He appealed to the people all over the country to maintain peace and brotherhood as the machinery of the government and the wheel of justice turn against the perpetrators of murder, arson, stealing, rape, assault and malicious damage to public and private property,”  he said.
