“Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.” – Song of Solomon 8:6

It is the love of God that seals us for Him. We are children of God because He adopted us and gave us the liberty to call Him father.

“But you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”” – Romans 8:15

The love of God is so strong that the Book of Song of Solomon compares it to death. Why such grave comparison? Readers across the centuries have suggested that it is death’s gravity and finality that make it an optimal comparator.

God expects such depth of love from His children as well. He is jealous over His own, and while God does not have favorites, He has intimates.

He opens the eyes of His intimates to deeper realms, knowing fully well that love involves sacrifice, and the intimates are willing to sacrifice for the joy of knowing their lover more intimately.

Like the way the book of the Song of Solomon puts it; “Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death,” we can see – when we look at the verse more critically – that God, like a jealous lover wants to take ownership of the one that loves Him more intimately.

What a beautiful thing, to be truly owned and favored by God.

Like a man who just bought off a land and put a fence around it. At the gate he hangs a banner that reads “This Land belongs to Mr. A. It is not for sale,” God is asking us to wear his necklace (seal) upon our necks and his bracelet upon our wrist.

Message translation of Songs of Solomon 8:6 reads:

“Hang my locket around your neck, wear my ring on your finger.”

Just like a man buys his betrothed a ring to wed her and in some culture, a necklace and a bracelet… God is asking us to accept His seal of ownership over us. It takes more than paying a lip service to accept it. It takes commitment. Are you willing to commit?

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, ¹⁴ who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.” – Ephesians 1:13-14
