– Pastor Adeboye, Kumuyi On Twitter Ban in Nigeria

Revered men of God, Pastor Adeboye of RCCG and Pastor William Kumuyi of Deeper Life Ministry among others have responded to the recent ban of Twitter in the country, provoking response from the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.

The Federal Government of Nigeria placed a ban on Twitter in the country on Friday last week and cited the fact that the platform is being used to incite disorderliness in the country.

This happened few days after Twitter deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial tweet about the civil war, making many believe this was the real reason behind the ban.

The men of God, although did not disagree with the Federal Government’s stance, they however gave cogent reason why their institution cannot be bound by the ban.

The General Overseer of RCCG took to his Twitter page on Monday to share that: “The Redeemed Christian Church of God is domiciled in more than 170 Nations & Territories. The tweets here are in accordance to Article 19 of the UN universal declaration of Human Rights.”

Hours later, Pastor Kumuyi also tweeted that his church has branches across over 100 countries and five continents hence it can tweet from anywhere in the world.

Seems like similar postion by Pastor Adeboye, Kumuyi on Twitter ban in Nigeria and rightly so since the platform is hosted on the worldwide web.

Reacting to the news, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed maintained that; “The Attorney-General has made it clear that if anybody violates the regulation that such a person will be prosecuted and this is not about any particular person. It is in the realm of the Attorney-General to decide who or who not to prosecute.”

So far, it is unclear what decision the presidency would take as many Nigerians continues to closely monitor the situation.
