A close friend of the actress, who was known as a staple on the long-running comedy sketch series, confirmed her death to PEOPLE on Thursday, April 24.

Roman, known for her charming personality and powerful voice, became a household name during her time on “Hee Haw,” a popular country music and comedy variety show that aired from the 1960s to the 1990s.
