-Israeli Strike Holy Family Church – Pope Leo XIV Mourns
Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep sorrow and mourning following reports of civilian casualties after an Israeli military strike hit the Holy Family Church compound in Gaza.
In an official statement released by the Vatican Press Office on Saturday, the Pope said he was heartbroken by the loss of innocent lives and offered prayers for the victims, many of whom had been sheltering at the church during ongoing hostilities in the region.
“The Holy Father is profoundly grieved by the news of the deaths that occurred at the Holy Family Church, a sacred space that has long stood as a place of refuge, peace, and prayer,” the statement read.
“He prays for the souls of the departed, for their grieving families, and for all those caught in the suffering caused by war.”

According to reports from local church officials and humanitarian workers, the church compound, which had been sheltering dozens of civilians, including women and children, sustained significant damage. Several fatalities and injuries were reported, though exact figures remain unconfirmed.
The Holy Family Church is the only Catholic parish in Gaza and has long served as a symbol of Christian presence and witness in the region. It is under the pastoral care of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
The clergyman, Pope Leo XIV reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire, urging all parties to prioritize humanitarian access, dialogue, and peace. War never brings true victory.
“Only peace rooted in justice and compassion can restore hope to the people of the Holy Land.”
