– Priest Warns Catholics Against Joining Hallelujah Challenge At Lent

Father Joshua Mary Ugbedeojo Abuh, a Catholic priest who runs the Facebook handle Magnificat Series, has warned Catholics against joining Nathaniel Bassey’s Hallelujah Challenge during Lent.

According to the priest, taking part in the Hallelujah Challenge, a programme centred around continuous praise and worship, while observing Lent contradicts long-standing Catholic observances and liturgical practice.

In his post, he described involvement in the challenge during Lent as “an insult to your faith and a testament of your faithlessness,” noting that the practice of omitting the word Hallelujah is a traditional part of Catholic Lenten discipline.

He emphasized that while the Hallelujah Challenge itself is not inherently wrong, Catholics should remain faithful to the penitential character of the Lenten season and its established spiritual practices.

Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and reflection leading up to Easter, is observed by Catholics worldwide as a time of solemn preparation.

Reactions to the priest’s warning have been mixed online. Some Catholics and Christians have supported the call to respect traditional liturgical seasons, while others argue that expressing faith through worship, including during Lent, should be a personal choice and not constrained by seasonal customs.
