DANGEROUS WORSHIP

In our last post, A FIXED HEART 2 by Rev. Kenny Osoba, which was an inspiring post for me, BTW. I hinted that Worship Leader and revered man of God, Don Moen was in Lagos last weekend.

As I read the account of Zoe Magazine I realized I have been so caught up in the array of having this worship leader in Nigeria the second time this year I had missed an important key to worship which he gave during his visit. I was so touched by this and I think it is paramount every Gospel artiste, every worshiper should know this. Therefore, I decided to share it with y’all cos sincerely, God loves you, I do too 🙂

During the workshop, Don Moen addressed worshipers, worship leaders and would-be worship leaders with these words as recorded by the said magazine saying:

“‘Less is more’ in the sense that the whole point of worship is about God and not drawing attention to the worship leader but the worship leader getting himself/herself out of the way for God to be the centre of it all”

The Bible says

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24

Worship is a spiritual rite. It surpasses aesthetics. It’s the new way to offer sacrifice to God. Its not a time to let the world know how dexterous you are with your voice. In fact, a deep worship takes you away from your flesh. It takes you to God’s presence so that you can perform your duty. Fine, somewhere, in our head there is always that subconscious urge to match up with the voices of the angels. It’s not a bad thing, atleast if the longing is to please God but when our flesh is urging us to outwit the other worshiper or to proof our expertise, it is no more a service unto God but a quest for self. This is why we see Gospel artistes suddenly switch to secular music or they try to compete in the ever growing music industry. This is because the flesh, as we said in our last life lesson is always in need and these needs are insatiable. As a result, We’re always subconsciously seeking for that misguided motivation in the form of reward. This is the same reason the devil was casted out of Heaven. Don’t you get it? You play by a different set of rules. You are not suppose to try to fit it. God has created you to stand out. He created you to show forth His praise, not your praise. You should take a cue from the numerous Gospel acts like Victor Olayeni, Kenny K’ore, Jahdiel, Gogo, amongst others [permit me to mention just a few. By the way, look out for their download link in future post.] These ones have worshiped God in spirit and in truth through their music and have been blessed.

“Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift You up.” James 4:10.

Worship means a reverent honor, homage paid to God. Even the dictionary was so specific. So then why has it become a thing of self? Especially amongst Gospel artistes. We really need to start checking this that God’s grace may abound. There is a danger in worship if it is done for self gain. Take the fall of Saul for instance. He was given specific instruction but He was more concerned about offering a fat bull, and I’m not even sure he had the intention to offer it to God. As a result, his kingdom was torn apart and taken from him.

“Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.” Proverb 17:1

David understood the essence of worship quite well. It was as if he saw into the future. A time when Christ would have paid for our “at-one-ment” with God so that we need not kill bulls and ram every evening but lift up holy hands as a living sacrifice unto God. He said:

“Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.” Ps 141:2

All God requires is our true worship. To make him the centre of it all. I think it’s a privilege to praise and worship Someone who has the host of Heaven, the angels and the 24 elders crying “Holy Holy” before him ceaselessly. That means no matter how many praise and worship we ascribe, we can never outdo the Heavenly host. Moreso, It shows how privileged, one is to be a Gospel artistes here on earth. If a Gospel artiste recognize this, he will seize from his struggles. who knows? it could be a good recommendation for you in heaven. So then, why don’t we try and compete with the heavenly host for the prospect of an everlasting reward instead of chasing after the reward that will perish here on earth?
