Beautiful songstress Nikki Laoye’s statement was misconstrued and therefore given another interpretation when she granted Newspaper media Thisday an interview on the 22nd of March 2014. She was asked to air her opinion on the antigay law to which she said that although she does not support the lifestyle, she feels the 14 year imprisonment sentence was unnecessary. This was clear on the Thisday article however, It was misinterpreted by some online media houses and therefore caused a frenzy on social media as Nikki Laoye was made to take some heat.
Nikki Laoye was asked her opinion on the recent antigay law to which she replied:
Personally, I am all for man and woman relationships only. I believe it’s the ideal plan by God when he created humankind. I just think the law and the 14 years imprisonment are unnecessary. Nigerians, even before the law, don’t appreciate or condone the gay mode. So, to me, it doesn’t change anything. We have other pending law matters for more important issues we are facing as a nation, still waiting to be addressed. Protection of the Nigerian citizens, the senseless killing of young unarmed students and our electricity issues. All these and more. These should be looked into fully instead.
