WEEKEND REVIEW: SO WHO'S GOT THE BEST GOSPEL VIDEO ANYWAY??? | FRANK EDWARDS, JOE PRAIZE, SAMMIE OKPOSO, NIKKI LAOYE, HENRISOUL & GLOWREEYAH

I’ve been getting questions coming in various forms, shapes and sizes (hehehe…) asking about my opinion of the best Gospel video in Nigeria. Truth is, not many Gospel video have stepped out of the invisible limiting boundaries but I know a few that have done that and that’s why I’m writing right now…

Joe Praize – Alpha & Omega

What makes this video unique is the genre of the song. It’s a simple sing along praise song. The type you could start the Sunday worship with in church or just have a couple of folks clap to it during cell meetings but Joe Praize went on to shoot an exceptional living-it-up video to the song. Something more frequent with the Hip Hop trends and not common amongst propagators of the genre of music (Praise Medley) to which he shot the video for.

From Sailing in a Yatch with director Holmes Okey to driving a Vintage Drop Top Shelby Cobra… This video remains my best Gospel music video and I’m yet to see any video shot on location (as oppose to set) that is better. (Oops! Bold statement… oh well!)

Henrisoul – Blow My Mind

Music Video: Henrisoul – “Blow My Mind” [Official Video]There is a reason this video made it to Soundcity and BET. It’s simply amazing. First, when you hear the song, “unconventional” pops up in your mind straight up, then you see the video and you simply conclude “that says it all!” I kinda have a problem with the term “alternative Gospel music,” all the same, unconventional means to the end is welcome at any time and Henrisoul’s “Blow my Mind” video shot by Clarence Peter defines that perfectly.

The set, the props, costumes and lighting takes you into the beautiful mind of Clarence Peter, rather, that of Henrisoul as interpreted by Clarence Peters. The use of dancers in not so conventional Christian outfit proves that the Gospel is for everybody and I do not think it stepped out of the boundaries of modesty.

Sammie Okposo – Who Tell You Say

Wow! The camera angles are just awesome! So is the texture. This is yet another video that wasn’t shot on set (save for some few scenes) and was well managed. Shot in South Africa as well by T.Frizzle of Frizle and Bizzle Films, it has some touch of class and added vintage to it. The cast and story is also a plus to the video although some of their dialogue where unbelievable.

Nikki Laoye  – 123 + Only You

Okay “123” Video dropped today and it’s a ‘wow!’ but it’s too early to conclude. Whatever the case is,  nice work Nikki… This one really pushed the limits. I think critics will have a filled day talking about the modesty bar though. It’s Choreography, coordination, picture, colour, texture and choice of location are all on point and this video may just take the place of the Best Gospel video shot on location for it’s dance moves and camera movement.

I’m not going to act like we have not seen something like the video for “Only You” before but it’s definitely not in the Gospel music genre. People use the kind of ambiance Nikki Laoye created for the song on Ballads. It’s nice seeing this in Gospel as well. Also the texture, picture and colour are exceptional. I would have loved to see more expression of the song on Nikki’s face though but it’s all good… I love it!

Glowreeyah Braimah – Turn Around

Lots of colourful things! (LoL). On Glowreeyah’s twitter bio, she has the phrase “Kaleidoscope of Colours” and true to her words, the video for “Turn Around says it all. Nice use of props and set. Ain’t no telling what you can achieve when you put a number of happy people on set, in front of the camera and with some colours!

Frank Edwards – Okaka

Okaka showed a different side of Frank Edwards we’ve only been allowed to imagine through his songs. Safe for the fact that we all know it was Frank Edwards that’s in the video, one can be forced to think it’s another good Nigerian club banger but hey, it won’t be a bad idea to have the song slam in clubs.

  1. My 2 kobo, Joe Praize’s video was really cool in terms of camera work, but i wasnt really feeling the storyline, waking up and driving to a boat, didnt seem like the kinda direction i was thinkin it would go. I loved Gloreeyah’s video because of the colours, everything was just on point, one of my favoirte. Sammie Okposo’s who tell you say has an over flogged script. People stuck in traffic then a singer comes and gets all dancing, very typical! ask Infinity, they used it in their song ‘only praise’ then even some secular guys have done that as well (Darey/JJC). I loved Nikki’s only you, i dont get what you mean about expressing the song, people relate with God differently, it showed (to me) a child in a loving relationship with a father, I dont think she should have been lifting her hands to the heavens when God is right here with you (lo I am with you always). Then 123 just blew me away. Flawless to me, costumes were so on point, choreography 100%. Henrisoul Blow my mind, really blew my mind. a complete dance part track, sure to turn up any party. it’s alternative music, cos it isnt the conventional gospel sound, i dont think there’s anything wrong with that though.

  5. nikki all the way for me, but Gospel music videos are stepping up from people playing in the garden and lifting up holy hands. i like these videos here. why i like nikki’s videos is that they are like kirk franklin videos, an unbeliever would raise the volume of the tv to understand what the song is about, but truthfully they would already be turned off if they see a bunch of ladies in white looking to the skies. Henrisoul’s videos too, i particularly love the ‘your love’ song and video, it is like gospel’s answer to flavour. we need more gospel artistes to push the envelope, sing about other topics like love, relationships, clean dance songs, that is how we can draw them in. as much as we need worship songs, we need other kinds too, to build us up. that is why the bible is so diverse n speaks of man things…shalom

  7. Definitely Mr. JoePraize.

Did you see hollywood style camera angles?
To the story line…its as simple as the praise sing along song- a simple day in Mr. JoePraize’s life. He wakes up, drives to the harbour, praizes God with friends, later goes for a rehearsal PRAISING GOD ALL THE WAY.

WAIT A MINUTE… MY LOVE SONG VIDEO ISNT HERE…SELAH AFRIK…..WHY?
