
Meriam Ibrahim, a Sudanese woman who has been in detention for months because she married a Christian and denouncing her Muslim faith has been freed, leaving Sudan to an unknown location for safety.
Meriam was re-arrested at Khartoume airport as she attempted to leave Sudan with her family to an undisclosed location on the 23rd day of June, 2014.
U.S. State Department during a briefing with reporters in Washington D.C today said Meriam is now free, safe and secure but didn’t make it clear if she’d left Sudan for the U.S, where she’s expected to seek political asylum.
Meriem Ibrahim, 27, was sentenced to be flogged and hanged to death in Sudan for marrying a Christian and converting from the Muslim faith on the 15th of May. It took the intervention of foreign body to ensure her release.
