Paris Olympics 2024 organizers have issued an apology letter, following complaints about a segment in the opening ceremony that featured a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.

The opening ceremony featured  DJ and producer Barbara Butch, an LGBTQ+ icon flanked by drag performers and dancers.

Religious leaders, however came out to speak against the last supper at the Olympics, as it was a disrespect and a mockery to the Christian faith.

Paris 2024 spokeswoman Anne Descamps, speaking at a press conference said;

“It’s clear that there was never any intention to disrespect any religious group. On the contrary, I think that with Thomas Jolly, we really tried to celebrate community tolerance,” Descamps said.

“Given the results of the surveys that we shared, we believe that this ambition has been achieved. If people were offended, we are, of course, really, really sorry.”

Reacting to the last supper, was also the French Catholic Church’s conference of bishops.

“This ceremony has unfortunately included scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity, which we very deeply deplore,” the Conference of French bishops said in a statement.
