Pope Leo XIV Mourns Victims Of Damascus Church Attack, Offers Prayers For Syria

Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep sorrow over the recent suicide attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Damascus, Syria, which claimed the lives of 25 people and left over 60 injured.

In a statement released on 24th of June, 2025, the Pope conveyed his condolences and solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.

The attack, which occurred during a Sunday service at Saint Elias Church, was claimed by a little-known Sunni Muslim extremist group.

The Pope’s message, signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, expressed heartfelt sympathy with the victims’ families and prayed for the recovery of the injured.

“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and destruction caused by the attack on the Greek Orthodox church of Mar Elias in Damascus,” said Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

“He expresses heartfelt solidarity with all those affected by this tragedy,” said the Italian cardinal, who is the second-highest official in the Catholic Church after the pope.
