As millions struggle with food insecurity during the ongoing federal shutdown, Pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Church in Georgia, took a bold step by redirecting tithes and offerings into food donations.

Instead of collecting money throughout November, Bryant asked his congregation to bring canned goods and pantry staples each Sunday to support the church’s King’s Table drive-through food program, which provides free groceries to families hit hardest by SNAP benefit freezes and rising unemployment.

“We’re going to perform miracles while the government is shut down,” Bryant told his congregation.

“It wouldn’t be right to ask people for offerings when so many don’t know how they’ll feed their kids or pay rent.”

Citing alarming statistics, including 42 million Americans facing SNAP cuts and 300,000 Black women losing their jobs since March, Bryant said the move came from a conviction of conscience and compassion.

Pastor Jamal also directed families to additional support networks like findhelp.org and whyhunger.org, which connect people to local food resources.
