-Prosperity & Poverty Gospels Are False – Banky W Says
Nigerian singer, actor, and pastor Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has stated that both the prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel are false and corrupted versions of Christianity.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, the entertainer-turned-preacher explained that the true gospel should focus on spiritual transformation and balance, rather than extreme teachings that either glorify wealth or idolize suffering.
“The prosperity gospel says if you serve God, you must be rich, that’s false. The poverty gospel says if you serve God, you must be poor, that’s also false,” Banky W said.

“Both are corrupted versions of what Jesus actually taught. The truth is in the middle, God blesses us so we can be a blessing to others.”
Banky W, who now serves as a pastor at The Waterbrook Church in Lagos, emphasized that material wealth should never be used as a measure of a person’s faith or righteousness, noting that many believers misunderstand the purpose of prosperity.
He added that Christians should pursue a balanced life rooted in service, generosity, and humility rather than extremes that distort the gospel’s message.
