U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces conducted air strikes against Islamic State militants in northwest Nigeria on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in international counter-terrorism cooperation in West Africa.

According to statements from the U.S. and Nigerian governments, the operation targeted Islamic State-linked groups and was carried out with intelligence sharing and approval from Nigerian authorities.

The strikes struck militant camps in Sokoto State, a region near the border with Niger that has seen increasing extremist activity.

In a social media post, the President said the strikes were directed at militants responsible for attacks on civilians and framed the action as a decisive response to persistent threats.

U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said precision strikes resulted in the deaths of multiple suspected ISIS fighters.

The Nigerian Foreign Ministry acknowledged the air strikes and confirmed cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing that joint security efforts comply with international law and respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The strikes come amid broader concerns over rising violence in northern Nigeria, where groups such as the Islamic State and other militant factions have been active for years, contributing to regional instability.

Nigerian military officials are reportedly increasing surveillance and security measures in response to potential militant movements following the air strikes.
