– Poor Pastor Debate – Pastor Joshua Iginla Weighs In
Senior Pastor of Champions Royal Assembly, Pastor Joshua Iginla, has weighed in on the ongoing “poor pastor” debate that has stirred conversations across Nigeria’s Christian space, urging believers to separate biblical prosperity from material excess and misuse.
Speaking during a recent message, Iginla acknowledged that while the gospel should never be reduced to wealth pursuit, prosperity itself is not anti-biblical and should not be demonised.
According to him, the real issue is not whether a pastor is wealthy or not, but the source, motive, and stewardship of prosperity.

He stressed that scripture does not glorify poverty, noting that many biblical figures were materially blessed yet remained spiritually grounded. Iginla cautioned against extreme positions on the matter, warning that dismissing prosperity entirely could create a distorted view of God’s blessings.
He also emphasized that financial abundance must never replace character, sound doctrine, and service. The cleric’s comments come amid widespread reactions to statements by Pastor Korede Komaiya on “never following a poor pastor,” which sparked mixed responses from church leaders and Christians nationwide.
While some argue that spiritual leadership should be judged strictly by doctrine and character, others believe that prosperity, when rightly understood, can reflect God’s provision rather than compromise.
