-Richard Smallwood Dies At 77 After Kidney Failure
Richard Lee Smallwood, the Grammy-nominated gospel singer, pianist, choir director and composer dies at the age of 77.
He passed away from complications related to kidney failure at the Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Sandy Spring, Maryland, his representative confirmed.
Smallwood’s influence on gospel music was profound. A classically trained musician, he brought sophistication and emotional depth to church music, blending traditional gospel with elements of classical harmony and contemporary sound.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, he earned eight Grammy nominations and numerous honors, including induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
He was best known for writing some of the most enduring songs in modern worship, including the anthem “Total Praise,” which became a staple in churches worldwide.
Smallwood is survived by his extended family, including siblings, nieces, nephews and many godchildren. Funeral and celebration of life arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and representatives.
