The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria pledges and has reiterated its commitment to its partnership with the Catholic Church as a key partner in advancing national development, peace, and social cohesion across the country.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, made the pledge during a goodwill message delivered at the First Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) held in Abuja on Sunday.

Describing the gathering as a “significant moment of reflection and pastoral direction for both the Church and the nation,” Akume expressed appreciation to the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria for its invitation and highlighted the Church’s enduring influence on Nigeria’s moral and developmental landscape.

“The pastoral letters and communiqués issued by Catholic bishops often reflect the conscience of the nation, urging public office holders to uphold transparency, accountability and servant leadership,” Akume said, emphasizing that such interventions grow out of Gospel values rather than political opposition.

In concluding his message, Akume commended the bishops for their leadership and resilience, expressing hope that the plenary discussions would yield resolutions that enhance evangelisation, deepen pastoral care, and contribute to national stability.
