– Tolu Agboola Cautions Pastors Over Gifts From Government

Nigerian cleric Apostle Tolu Agboola has cautioned Christian leaders against indiscriminately accepting gifts, financial donations and other forms of support from government officials, stressing the importance of maintaining integrity and avoiding compromises in ministry.

Agboola’s warning highlights the need for pastors to exercise discernment when receiving financial contributions from individuals occupying public offices, particularly where the sources of such funds may raise questions.

The cleric’s position also brings attention to the responsibility of church leaders to uphold transparency and ensure that their ministries are not influenced by questionable financial relationships.

His comments come amid ongoing conversations within Christian circles about the relationship between the church and political leaders, as well as the ethical responsibilities of religious institutions when receiving financial support from people in positions of authority.

The issue has previously attracted public attention following instances of pastors rejecting donations from government officials.

In June 2025, Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Pastor Paul Enenche, rejected a ₦30 million donation from Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris during a crusade in the state. Enenche explained that his decision was guided by a longstanding principle of avoiding government funding to preserve the independence of his ministry.

Agboola’s caution further reinforces discussions about financial accountability, ministerial independence and the need for religious leaders to remain above reproach in their dealings with political authorities.

His remarks have also raised questions about the boundaries that should exist between the pulpit and political power, particularly when financial generosity could potentially create expectations or obligations.
