A devastating attack on a Catholic church in Komanda, eastern DR Congo, killed 38 people and 15 others injured.

The attack, believed to have been carried out by ISIS-linked rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), occurred during an overnight mass, with victims being hacked to death or shot.

The ADF, known for repeated atrocities in the region, stormed the church while worshippers were in prayer, catching them off guard.

Several houses and shops were also burned down, and many people remain missing after the attack, which happened while Catholic Christians were attending a prayer vigil at the church, run by the Caritas charity.

“The rebels mainly attacked Christians who were spending the night in the Catholic church,” said Christophe Munyanderu, a human rights activist present at the scene in Komanda. “Unfortunately, these people were killed with machetes or bullets.”

The United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission (MONUSCO) has strongly condemned the surge in ADF attacks, calling them part of a troubling pattern of rising violence.
