-Owo Church Attack – Trial To Begin As Five Men Faces Court Case

In a major development in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the Owo church massacre, five men were arraigned today before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

You would recall that on June 5, 2022, during Pentecost Sunday mass at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, gunmen assaulted worshippers with both firearms and explosives, causing catastrophic casualties.

The defendants, Idris Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Otuho Abubakar, are accused of orchestrating the devastating June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, which left at least 50 worshippers dead and more than 100 injured.

They were remanded into the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Judge Emeka Nwite has scheduled the commencement of the trial for August 19, 2025, a mere eight days from now, a pivotal moment expected to test the nation’s ability to prosecute high-profile terrorism cases effectively.

According to the prosecution, the suspects and others still at large allegedly joined the Al Shabab terrorist group in 2021 and operated a cell in Kogi State, contrary to Section 25(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
