Events That Shaped 2014: Crystal Awards, FIFA World Cup, #BringBackOurGirls Campaign & More

2014 has been an eventful year! We shed some tears and laughed a lot at other times but all in all, we have been more than conquerors in all things. Here are some landmark events and happenings that has made the year so great:

WAFBEC 2014

A host of international and national ministers of the Word of Faith movement converged in Lagos from the 26th to the 31st of January and dished out knowledge. The event was hosted by Pastor Poju Oyemade, Senior Pastor of Covenant Christian Centre.

Tasha cobbs, Tye Tribbett and Mandisa scoop Grammy Awards

Tasha Cobbs won a Grammy for “Break Every Chain, Tye Tribbett for “If He Did it Before… Same God”, Best Gospel Album and Mandisa for “Overcomer at the 2014 Grammy Awards which held in January. It was the first Grammy for the “Break Every Chain” singer and just few weeks before that, she lost her dad haven won a Stellar.

DJ Gosporella made it public news that the Gosporella FM will start test run but it wasn’t untill October 2014 that the station was officially launched, A lot of personalities came by the station to show their support on the day it was launched.

Bring Back our Girls Campaign

On the night of 14th/morning of 15th of April 2014, 276 female students were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State by the terrorist sect Boko Haram. This kicked off the world wide campaign for the return of the girls tagged – #BringBackOurGirls. Voluntarily spearheaded by former education minister Oby Ezekwesili, other international personalities who joined in include the first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys, amongst others.

The wedding took place in June and it was the talk of the whole social media!

SABC Crown Awards

SABC Crown awards marked its 7th year in October and Nigeria’s Sammie Okposo won an award for Best of Africa.

Kefee Passed On in June

When news got out that Kefee was in critical state, no one thought it was her last days before she departed from amongst us. We prayed, we kept faith but some answers are better left till eternity. We lost a gem but her legacy lives on!

Tola Proposes to his Girlfriend Mabel on the Crystal Awards stage

Tola Omoniyi of Praiseworld Radio beat Gaise’s record as the most romantic man in the “Gospeldom” when he proposed to his girlfriend Mabel in front of all the Crystal Awards audience. You can imagine how the whole auditorium went agog and out of control!

Ghana artistes based in UK and American Rapper Andy Mineo wedded their fiancee on the same day – August 23 – in different parts of the world.

Lecrae’s  “Anomaly” Album No. 1 on Billboard 200

Lecrae released his 7th studio album  – Anomaly on the 9th of September 2014 after postponing the release date once. The album hit the shelves and became an instant hit climbing to the number one spot on Billboard 200! The album sold 88000 copies in its first week.

FIFA World Cup 2014

The world cup began on the 12th of June and ended on the 13th of July with Germany as the winner.

Chaz B Passed On

We lost “Sharing Life Issue” anchor Chaz B. He had battled Kidney failure for some years. He was also a relationship coach. So many people including our Gospel artistes had beautiful things to say about him. We will never forget your mantra; “If each one could reach one and each one could teach one, what a better place we would live in”

Myles & Ruth Munroe Pass on Alongside 7 others  in a Plane Crash on November 9

World Trade Centre reopened & Renamed

The world trade centre which was destroyed by terrorist on September 11, 2001 was reopened and renamed The One World Trade Center on the 3rd of November, 13 years after the fatal event.

Destiny Child Season 3 Kicked off in November

Gospel music talent hunt Destiny Child kicked off another season with a press briefing in Lagos on the 4th of November 2014. The search which has gone past the audition stage is till ongoing.
