American computer programmer, Internet entrepreneur and also founder of giant social network Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg alighted Church has key factor for future of social media site.

The business tycoon stated that he wants to turn Facebook into a “church” of sorts, a place where users achieve great things together and ginger their community for the better.

Zuckerberg pointed this out last week in Chicago at the first Facebook Communities Summit saying “It’s so striking that for decades, membership in all kinds of groups has declined as much as one-quarter, That’s a lot of of people who now need to find a sense of purpose and support somewhere else. People who go to church are more likely to volunteer and give to charity – not just because they’re religious, but because they’re part of a community.”

He continued by saying  “A church doesn’t just come together. It has a pastor who cares for the well-being of their congregation, makes sure they have food and shelter. A little league team has a coach who motivates the kids and helps them hit better. Leaders set the culture, inspire us, give us a safety net, and look out for us.”

This comes as Facebook reached 2 billion users on Tuesday and expands its previous mission. The 33 year old billionaire had met with ministers in Waco who are helping their congregations find deeper meaning in a changing world earlier in the year.

However, Christians and publications have interpreted Zuckerberg’s statement differently. While some said he was suggesting the social network should draw inspiration from the church, others fretted he was envisioning a future where Facebook replaces the church.

Mark Zuckerberg announced during the meeting the new mission of the world’s largest social network: “Bring the world closer together.”
