-Cynthia Erivo Spark Controversy Over Portrayal Of Jesus Christ

British actress Cynthia Erivo, spark controversy following her portrayal of Jesus Christ in a bold new production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

The reimagined stage show, which debuted last week in New York City, casts Erivo as the traditionally male biblical figure, prompting both praise and criticism from audiences, religious groups, and cultural commentators.

Erivo’s performance as Jesus has been described by some as “transcendent” and “revolutionary.”

However, the casting choice has drawn sharp criticism from some religious and conservative groups, who accuse the production of blasphemy and of straying too far from biblical tradition.

Social media platforms have become battlegrounds for clashing opinions, with hashtags like NotMyJesus and ErivoChrist, trending over the past several days.

“This is not just about casting,” said Reverend Michael Grant of the New Covenant Fellowship. “This is about respecting sacred figures and religious tradition. The portrayal of Jesus as a Black woman is deeply offensive to many believers.”

In contrast, supporters of the production argue that the message of Jesus, compassion, justice, and love is not bound by gender, race, or appearance.

“Art is meant to challenge,” said Dr. Leila James, a professor of theology and cultural studies at NYU. “Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal invites us to think about how we see the divine in others, especially in those historically marginalized.”

Whether seen as a spiritual revolution or a step too far, Cynthia Erivo’s Jesus has undeniably reignited discussion around representation, religion, and the role of art in society.
