A patient who underwent Nigeria’s first reported tele-robotic surgery has shared his experience following the groundbreaking medical procedure carried out through Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV), RoboMed Global.
The patient was treated in Abuja while the specialist surgeon, operated remotely from a robotic console at Redeemer’s Health Village.
The procedure, performed on September 19, was a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy, which involved removing a kidney affected by a cancerous tumor.

In a video shared on Instagram, the patient reflected on his experience and the medical care he received before and after the operation.
The successful operation has been described by the institutions involved as Nigeria’s first tele-robotic surgery and the first telesurgery of its kind in West Africa. The procedure demonstrated how robotic technology and high-speed connectivity can potentially allow specialist surgical expertise to reach patients across significant distances.
According to reports, the approximately three-hour operation was carried out using a Toumai robotic surgical system, with connectivity supported by Starlink and MTN backup. The patient was reported to be in stable condition following the procedure.

Redeemer’s Health Village, a 300-bed multispecialty hospital established by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), said the development could help expand access to advanced medical care in Nigeria and reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for specialised procedures.
The patient’s firsthand account now adds a human dimension to the historic medical milestone, showing the experience from the perspective of the person at the centre of the pioneering procedure.
