Sonar's Journal: Interactive Technology, Evolution & Us – Tale Of The Urban King

internet-04Once upon a time, the undisputed king of attention was the Television, described as a box filled with wonders, a gateway to the world where fantasy lives and thrives.

A home without a Television set back then especially in the 80’s was Like a dead one… Boring as… Just boring and to think that some children actually went through that.

The popularity of the Television continued to grow to the point where it actually defined your status among peers depending on the size, type and colour capacity. While some homes had the conventional black and white TV, many others had the privilege of owning a coloured set.

While growing up if your family had the coloured TV set then you get to enjoy a level of recognition among friends who will often see you as a rich kid. Then if your Dad bought a VHS player popularly called Video Player, then you are the king of the pack belonging to an elite group.

The oppression back then was no joke, other kids trooped to houses with Video Players to watch movies and get into trouble with their parents when they return home late.

The TV set reigned supreme for a very long time and at some point became an object of dread to parents who will often battle for the attention of their children who were TV addicts at the time.

Complains emerged in the face of neglected home chores due to an unhealthy exposure to the TV so children were given conditions amidst restrictions before they could watch the TV.

Sermons even emerged at some point, condeming the excessive viewing of the TV giving the reason of adult content, violence and sexual scenes as reasons why people should cut down on viewing time as well practice selective viewing but surprisingly some homes went the extreme and threw their TV sets away.

I am curious to know what these set of people think about the Internet today that is more popular than the TV set and a thousand times more potent plus it is everywhere.

THE NEW URBAN KING

While the TV set is still popular as it keeps evolving, it however no longer holds the number one spot as another similar but more interactive platform now rules. This platform engages you, gives you almost anything you want at anytime, it is not restricted like the TV set to the home or convenience, this new king follows you on the go.

It is tenacious and owes it’s popularity to the fact that it enjoys partnerships with other platforms such as your PC, Laptops, Mobile phones, Tabs etc for far more reach than the Television.

YOUNG BELIEVERS

Like Fire and Water the Internet has been used for both great good and great evil and unlike the TV set, parents cannot effectively guide their teenagers who can easily brows from the confines of their rooms accessing every and anything without restrictions.

They fondle with their phones all day and fall asleep while chatting at night all the while the Bible is sitting somewhere bathed with dust.

– Sunday Imonah

Back in the day, believers woke up, prayed, read their Bibles, spoke into their day and sometimes joined a bigger general family devotion before stepping out of their houses, then there was more sanity and order but today that God has blessed us with technology the routine for many has changed.

Today many grab their phones first thing in the morning and waste close to two hours reading crap online with just a few actually reading something useful. They fondle with their phones all day and fall asleep while chatting at night all the while the Bible is sitting somewhere bathed with dust.

With the way technology is growing it is a blessing but only when it is put to proper use. Today the need to moderate lies with individuals. Success in life on the other hand, depends on how well you can regulate your application of technology in your daily activities.

The Urban King (The Internet) is here to stay and we all have our chances to position ourselves in its kingdom. The peasants will be those who will be slaves to the Internet achieving nothing with it, while the fellow kings and elites will be those who will gain much and enrich their lives in all aspect through proper use of this technology.

Which do you belong?
