-Jaywon Slams Billboard – Gospel & Afrobeats Artist Copy My Song

Nigerian singer Jaywon, slams Billboard over the release of top 50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All Time, alleging that many gospel and Afrobeats artists have appropriated the unique template of his 2012 hit, “This Year.”

The omission of his song from the list has further fueled his frustration.

On his X handle, Jaywon passionately defended the cultural longevity and influence of This Year. He wrote;

“‘This Year’ by Jaywon had more viral moments and cultural impact than some of the tracks Billboard decided to rank. Trending since 2012 and still going strong.

“Tell me, who else has pulled that off? Hate is inevitable. Year after year, both gospel and Afrobeats acts copy the same vibe, yet we remain unshaken. Cry harder, I said it before, and I’ll say it again… No song on that list has more cultural impact than #ThisYear by Jaywon.”

Jaywon asserts that This Year has transcended being just a hit track, it has become a cultural staple featured in celebrations, weddings, church events, and New Year countdowns since its release.

He believes that its distinctive feel continues to influence both gospel and mainstream Afrobeats music, yet remains uncredited.
