– Yemi Osinbajo Stopped Drinking After Becoming Born Again
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed the personal experience that led him to stop drinking alcohol, despite being a born-again Christian at the time.
Osinbajo made the disclosure while speaking at a recent leadership event in Maryland, United States, where he reflected on faith, personal discipline, and the responsibilities of leadership.
According to him, he initially saw no conflict between his Christian faith and moderate alcohol consumption. He said he often justified his stance by referencing the biblical account of Jesus Christ turning water into wine.

“I was very convinced that I could drink alcohol… Jesus turned water into wine, so why not?” he said.
The former vice president admitted that he occasionally drank red wine and beer and had even decided to continue doing so after becoming born again.
However, he recounted that a turning point came during an official visit to Mogadishu, Somalia. After preaching at a Christian fellowship, he planned to buy alcohol before returning to his room.
At a restaurant within the United Nations compound, Osinbajo said he noticed colleagues hurriedly hiding their drinks upon seeing him. When he questioned one of them, he was told it was out of respect for his role as a pastor.
The incident, he said, triggered deep reflection about his influence and the expectations placed on him as a spiritual leader.
“It became very clear to me that… while all things may be lawful, not all things are expedient,” he explained, adding that he has not taken alcohol since that day.

Osinbajo noted that the decision was a personal conviction rather than a directive for others, emphasising the importance of living consistently with one’s beliefs.
The revelation has sparked conversations on social media about faith, personal choices, and the responsibilities of public and religious figures, particularly those in leadership positions.
