The Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures by fencing their premises as they suspend late-night activities amid growing concerns over the safety of worshippers.

The directive was issued as part of efforts to enhance security around places of worship and reduce the vulnerability of churches to criminal attacks and other security threats.

According to the association, church leaders should take proactive steps to protect members by ensuring that worship centres have adequate physical security infrastructure, including perimeter fencing and controlled access points.

CAN also advised churches to reconsider programmes that extend late into the night, particularly in areas where security challenges have become a source of concern. The association noted that limiting late-night gatherings could help reduce risks to congregants and church workers.

The body urged church administrators to work closely with local security agencies, community leaders, and neighbourhood watch groups to improve surveillance and emergency response capabilities around worship centres.

It further encouraged churches to establish internal security teams, maintain proper visitor monitoring systems, and educate members on basic safety practices during religious gatherings.

The latest directive comes amid increasing calls for enhanced security measures at public gathering places across the country, including schools, markets, and religious centres.

Religious leaders in the state have expressed support for efforts aimed at safeguarding worshippers, stressing that security remains a shared responsibility among institutions, communities, and government agencies.

While reaffirming its commitment to the spiritual well-being of Christians in the state, CAN emphasized that protecting lives and property must remain a priority, urging churches to promptly implement the recommended measures.

The association also called on relevant authorities to intensify efforts to address security challenges and ensure that citizens can worship freely without fear of intimidation or attack.
