Pope Leo XIV arrives in Barcelona ahead of a landmark ceremony to bless and inaugurate the newly completed central tower of the iconic Sagrada Família Basilica, now recognized as the tallest church in the world.

The papal visit forms part of a broader tour of Spain and comes during commemorations marking 100 years since the death of renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, whose vision shaped the world-famous basilica.

Crowds gathered across Barcelona to welcome the pontiff as anticipation grew for the historic event. The centerpiece of the visit is the blessing of the Tower of Jesus Christ, the tallest structure within the basilica complex, which now rises prominently above the city skyline.

Church leaders and local officials have described the occasion as a significant milestone in the decades-long construction of the Sagrada Família, one of the most recognizable religious landmarks in the world.

Construction on the basilica began in the 19th century and has continued for more than a century, surviving wars, economic challenges, and changing generations of builders and craftsmen.

The celebrated architect devoted much of his life to the project, combining intricate religious symbolism with nature-inspired design elements that have drawn millions of visitors from around the globe.

The papal blessing is expected to attract thousands of worshippers, pilgrims, and tourists, further highlighting the global significance of the basilica and its place in modern religious and architectural history.
